The Challenge

While advances in healthcare and technology have extended lifespans, there remains a lack of products that offer solutions to effectively support older adults in managing chronic illnesses and aging in place.

The “Silver Tsunami” is bringing a rapidly growing senior population, with the number of people over 60 expected to exceed 2 billion by 2050. While healthcare advancements have improved longevity, traditional solutions for managing chronic conditions require frequent, inconvenient doctor visits and often don’t offer continuous, real-time health tracking.

Many older adults struggle with complex technologies, leaving them underserved. AI-powered solutions can offer continuous, at-home health monitoring, empowering seniors to manage their health independently and reducing the need for doctor visits. However, AI in healthcare remains underutilized for this demographic, creating a significant gap in accessibility and ease of use.

Reserch

Through our research, we discovered that hypertension is the most common chronic disease among older adults, which became the driving factor in identifying a solution to monitor and manage health more effectively.

We then explored how different user types, segmented across four key matrices: Tech Savvy vs. Tech Avoidant + Socially Connected vs. Isolated, Proactive vs. Reactive + Low Income vs. High Income, Early Adopter vs. Creature of Habit + Holistic vs. Western Medicine, and Proactive vs. Reactive + High Independence vs. Assistance, inform the design of UrInform.

These insights revealed diverse needs: from tech-savvy, proactive users seeking detailed health data, to those with lower income or high independence who need simple, accessible solutions. By understanding these dimensions, we were able to create a product that is both intuitive and scalable, offering a personalized health experience that meets the needs of a broad spectrum of older adults.

Solution & Design

Our solution, UrInform, is an AI-powered, at-home urine analysis system that seamlessly integrates into daily life. Designed to be non-intrusive, it attaches to a standard toilet, capturing vital health data with each bathroom visit. With no complex app setup or technical knowledge required, UrInform empowers older adults to manage their health independently.

The product continuously monitors key health metrics, such as hydration and glucose levels, and securely shares real-time insights with both the user and their healthcare provider. By focusing on simplicity, accessibility, and proactive care, UrInform addresses the unique needs of seniors, helping them stay healthier and reduce the frequency of doctor visits.

Impact & Results

UrInform has the potential to revolutionize healthcare for older adults by providing continuous, passive health monitoring. Early testing and feedback have shown that it helps users track their health more effectively, leading to earlier detection of potential issues like hypertension and kidney disease. By streamlining the doctor-patient communication process,

UrInform reduces the need for frequent office visits, saving time and healthcare costs. Moreover, the product’s ease of use and non-intrusive design have resonated with seniors, particularly those with limited tech experience. UrInform empowers users to take charge of their health, enhances their sense of security, and promotes a proactive approach to wellness, all while helping to alleviate the burden on healthcare systems.
